what's up?

sun up

1950 chevy deluxe

from the first show of the day. we got there a little late; i'd snoozed the alarm a couple of times, having gone to bed late, then the third time i'd accidently set it to a weekday alarm. duh. just happened to wake up about six.

still arrived just about roll in time, so we still found parking and had stuff to shoot. really nice cars and many clubs showed up. tried to make the most out of the sun, which was already coming up. most of the beautiful light was hitting the back parking lot, where there were only regular cars still parked at the time, so that was unfortunate.

out here in the front, the host club's cars—old memories eastside—were still in the shadow of the building. had to go over to the far side to find something with some light hitting it.

this one turned out ok, though the camera sensor really didn't like it. had to blur out some horizontal lines, that i could otherwise not explain.

apologies to the club guy who had spoken to my better half about getting a picture of the club, then sent him my way because he wasn't carrying the right lens. we had to leave after a couple of hours, so maybe another time, when your group is already gathered.

carnitas craving

1958 chevy impala

took me two and a half hours to get to whittier today. yay friday. at least it was payday. missing q-vo trunk n treat tonight...just done driving for the day.

better half worked a few hours overtime, and apparently just got home. i just walked uptown to the mexican cafe, which is suprisinly busy just now. so i've just ordered a couple of carnitas plates and drinks--i do hope he shows up. he just sent a text that he's on his way, and he walks fast, maybe he's timed it just right and food will be served when he arrives.

several car shows tomorrow. hoping to get to at least two, and that depends on whether the first one is worth staying for, after the sun comes up. thinking old memories pancake bfast to start. i think i went to this show a couple of years ago. was pretty good then, but hot--and its all asphalt parking lot. i do expect some exceptional cars to show, at least according to the instagram chatter.

the other would be the veteranos, over at the elks club. not far between the two, so that helps. too bad there is only one sunrise a day. i suspect after those, i'll have no energy for trunk n treat shows. i should take my car in for repair estimates too...already got a few tips on places to go.

beautiful impala. deep chocolate paint job. this model year is good from the back end, but this little detail also makes it easy to identify, even for me.

better half just got here, so i'll stop.

talk to her

1951 chevy deluxe

another from the trunk n treat show. wasn't familiar with this club, and they didn't have plaques, just tshirts with their logo.

really should be posting a picture of a truck—belonged to one of the members, who called their presidente over to tell me about the club. he seemed distracted by the setting up activities, so didn't really get much out of him, more than a handshake.

now two days later, i can't remember if this or another next to it was his car. they're both light green, they're both the same year. only difference is one has a white roof, the other a black roof. i'm thinking it's the other one. i suppose someone will let me know, one way or another and put me out of my misery. i'll have to post up the truck too.

better half is sick, but we had planned to go uptown to watch the princess bride for classic movie night, so i flipped a coin, and i'm going to go by myself. so no new pictures until maybe tomorrow, if i'm in town.

picked up a ticket earlier, but due to "technical difficulties," they're substituting it with indiana jones and the last crusade. better half says it was a good flick. i only remember it had sean connery in it, and they had to cross the bridge to the knight guarding the chalice. i have a bad memory when it comes to films i saw long ago and far away.

more popcorn for me, i guess. he's sick, but he'll be there to walk me home afterwards. hmm. almost time to start walking back...

caught a ride

1954 chevrolet bel air

my better half needed to take his mom out for a little shopping at hobby lobby yesterday. she rarely goes out, and when she does, he makes it a priority to get her where she wants to go.

closest one of those crafty stores around here is over in west covina. well that's convenient—there happened to be a trunk n treat show hosted by the los angeles bombs starting up in the afternoon, not too far away. hadn't completely decided against going on my own, but since they were headed that way, figured i'd hitch a ride and shoot a few pictures while they took off and shopped.

his mom was ready to go about one-thirtyish. my problem was roll-in really wasn't advertised to start until three. factor in the horrible traffic that backs up the ten freeway, it would put me in the parking lot about two-thirtyish. we chose to avoid traffic, and do surface streets, which still got us there about the same time, but at least we were moving, not sitting in traffic.

vendors were still setting up, but there were at least a couple of cars i could start with. wasn't sure how much time i would have before they would be back to get me. was pretty sure more cars would start showing up than i would have time to shoot. and they did.

took a bunch of pictures in the lot, then during a lull in incoming cars, noticed a couple outside, or just at the edge of the taped off area. wandered over to take a few of this bel air.

was admiring it and the color, when the owner walked up behind me, munching on what looked like a breakfast burrito. i asked him why he'd parked out here instead of in with the rest of the cars. he said he'd just been passing by and saw the show. stopped to check it out. said he'd seen a flyer, but had forgotten about it happening that day.

not long after, my better half let me know they were on their way back for me. i headed back to the main area, and took a few more shots. some guys letting me know more of their cars were coming, so i could shoot those cars too. too late. better half arrived, and i had to leave.

saw lots more cars coming in as we left. also saw that this one had decided to join in, and was driving through the entry way, past the vendors. hope he won one of the trophies.

-------

better half isn't feeling good today, so we skipped going to the pomona swap meet. i'm thinking i'll wait a bit, for high noon sun to pass, then head over to the cruise at legg lake.

told you it shines

1940 chevrolet special deluxe

how'd it get so late?

quick post, then to bed.

ran into my friend ernie and his wife at the dia de los muertos, uptown last week. they said it was the first one they'd participated in, and i don't think any of their other club members were there, unsure that it would be worth the drive.

they offered me a bottle of water, which i gladly took, as i was overheating about that time, and still hadn't had breakfast.

they took a picture of me, so i took a couple of pictures of them. camera wasn't quite the right setting, and it's not quite sharp as i know that lens can be, but it's ok.

i think they might just have had the best spot on the street, as far as shade goes. probably had shade most of the day, which was quite pleasant on a hot day. being their first time there, they didn't know if pop-ups were allowed, so they lucked out.

i told them their car was glowing, with the light sifting through the tree branches. not sure if i captured it, but there's at least a hint of it here.

to the other couple of people who offered me bottles of water, thank you so much if i refused it—i'd just chugged one right before you asked...

escape

1949 chevy truck

we got to the showlows' volo show at st hilarys last saturday, before the sun came up. even though roll in was still an hour or two away, can usually catch a clubs' cars way early, and when you're after that gentle morning light, they are the best shots of the day sometimes.

but in the tumult that was our saturday afternoon, running about getting things done and packed for our trip, i only had time to download my pictures, stack them, tag them, and randomly pick one. so this truck is it for now, until we get back home.

i've seen it around before, on other peoples' instagrams, and they drove past the house recently, but i don't think i have it in my files.

the sun was already up by the time i got over here. i was looking at cars, and trying to catch them as the golden light hit them.

there was stuff on the other side of this truck, but i really liked the sun peeking through the window, as well as all the patina detail from this side. its a rough looking truck, but very cool.

we arrived early in san diego yesterday, about eight in the morning. had to drive, instead of taking a train this time, since they are not running trains next weekend for bridge repairs somewhere on the line. oh well. don't really need a car in town, but gives more flexibility depending what we want to do or when we want to leave.

we've stayed at this hotel before, and the lady at the front desk remembered us. told her we're here for our anniversary, so she did her best to get us a room as soon as possible. found one that was vacant, but not cleaned yet, and got housekeeping on the phone to ask them to get to it first.

we were in a room by nine, and sleeping by ten. three hours later, we woke up and headed over to the old spreckels theatre. i'd gotten tickets to see "the producers" on the stage, and needed to get them from will call. doors weren't open yet, so we went to horton plaza for some "gourmet" fine dining at taco bell. it was quick, and we were hungry, so don't judge.

back down to the theatre, still about twenty minutes until doors opened. decided i'd go take a wazz, so maybe i wouldn't have to stand in the long line at intermission. guy at the info booth said there were bathrooms on the fourth floor.

now, if you're not familiar with the spreckels theatre, it's an old building. built in nineteen twelve for a million dollars. theatre on the first floor and offices on the upper floors. we took the old elevator up, and get out, like stepping back in time. frosted glass windowed, empty offices up and down the white tiled hallways, the kind you'd expect to find a private eye in old black and white movies, with gold lettering painted on the glass.

i guess he sent us up to the fourth floor, because there is randomly a bail bondsman office there. we wandered around the hallways, which seemed to follow the perimeter of the building, with a central corridor. we split up, looking for the bathrooms. i found the mens room on one side, he found the women's on the opposite side of the building. it's fairly echoey with all the hexagonal tiling, and marble stairwells, so he yelled that he'd found it.

took care of business, and we took the stairwell down four flights. theatre was open by then, so in we went.

hour and a half later, it was intermission. out to stretch our legs. there's a line for candy, and a line for the bathroom, as expected. decided i'd be more comfortable if i got rid of that pepsi from lunch, but didn't want to wait in that horrifically long line.

noticed the marble stairs next to the elevators. wondered if there might be bathrooms up a level. no one stopped us, so up we went. figured they would be located at the same ends of the halls as the other floor. walking around, we realized there was no one on this floor. just locked, empty or closed business offices.

better half waits in the hallway, and i open the old frosted glass door to the women's room. there's an open window, with a view of a rooftop, which must be the top of the theatre and it must be some empty atrium-like space to the sky that the hallways go around.

the facilities in the restroom aren't the original porcelain, but the stalls themselves probably are. i choose the farthest of the three, and pull the door shut. it doesn't want to close well, kind of is jammed, not quite fitting into the frame. i don't know why i pulled it fully shut, grabbing it from the top of door, in order to lock it by turning the little brass knob--there was no one else on this floor--but i did. dropped trou, did what you do, and stood back up.

go to open the stall door, and it doesn't budge. there's just the tiny brass handle to pull on, so, for a better grip, i pull from the top of the door, same place that i had forced it shut. it doesn't move. i think maybe its still locked; i can't remember if i turned the latch, or if i did, there's no mark indicating opened or closed.

i lean over to try pulling it from the bottom, but then think, if its stuck that hard, and i manage to pull it open while bent down, i'll bash myself in the head with this old, solid wood door. that would be a pretty dumbass move, wouldn't it? so instead i see if i can reach from both top and bottom of the door and give it a few pulls. nope, this door is wedged shut, and i'm not going anywhere, since it opens inward and i don't have leverage.

thinking we're the only people on this floor, i decided i could just call to my better half, to come in and save me, and we could be out before anyone might notice, should anyone randomly come up the stairs, and catch us coming out of the bathroom together.

i called him. i called him again. hmmm. it echoes off the tile. nothing. i'm not going to all out scream, i'll save that for real danger. looking down, notice the floor is relatively clean, since it isn't overly used. mentally calculating if there's enough space under the door vs enough space between the door and the toilet, and decide i will try to get down and shimmy under the door.

so that's what i did, feet first, sliding on my ass, pulling myself under the door. don't think i've ever had to do that before, not even as a kid. check that off my bucket list, i guess.

standing up, looking at the door, i notice the old brass inset shows "occupied." its locked, so no use pushing the door. thought about going back under to unlock it for about half a second, then said, nah, gotta get back downstairs. dusted off my pants, washed my hands, and opened the door to the hallway, and where is my better half?

he'd made use of the wait to call his mom, and has walked down to the other end of the hallway, chatting away about the show. never heard me call him. told him my story as we went down the stairs, and laughed about it all the way to our seats. at least i didn't have to wait in the line, which still had anxious women waiting to "freshen up," snaking out the door.

btw, it was a very good show. excellent acting and singing, but not enough air conditioning, so the main actors were sweating right through their suits.

the trunk

go dodgers

was asked to shoot this trunk. owner had been chatting with my better half, and called me over.

i like baseball, grew up watching the dodgers and listening to vin scully, so ok, i'll shoot it.

haven't really paid much attention to the games this year, or baseball at all. one thing after another, ya know.

posting it in honor of his retirement, on this, the last day calling a game. we'll miss you, vin!

missing san pedro today; celebrating our ninth anniversary this week out of town. happy my better half has put up with me this long; he deserves a cuddle or something.

fuck chipotle

1965 chevy impala

saw this at legg lake, end of summer cruise. very clean, and not one i typically care about. but i like nice pinstripes, and the tail lights are distinctive, so there you go.

i grow tired of going to the same places for lunch every day at work. don't get me wrong, there are a lot more fine dining establishments nearby, but i get an hour, and i dont want to pay twenty bucks for something fancy every day.

so end of last week, i thought i'd give chipotle a shot again. it had been a while since they'd been in the news for food borne illness, and figured maybe they had gotten their shit together.

well, they must have gotten their shit together. the employees must have put that shit into the carnitas, cuz i got sick a day later, and felt like shit all weekend. chills and cramps. it was over a hundred outside, but i was under a blanket off and on for a day.

as usual, there wasn't much of a line there. the enthusiastic employee that greeted me and served up my burrito was really quite nice, though a bit over the top, but i think that it was just his personality.

now on the other side of a crap weekend, i'd really just like to reach over that glass partition, grab him by his chubby face, and scream, "i know it was you, fredo!" then invite him to go for a ride on a boat to catch some fish...

anyway, i didn't do much for most of the weekend. late sunday, i did manage to go uptown, to snap a picture of an old car i'd seen drive by the window. but no shows for me. just sleeping, crapping, and whining about the cramp in my side. yay.

never say never, but it will be a very long time before i venture into that place again. thanks, fredo.

plans

same clubs and cars always seem to get these spaces under the solar panels at san fernando. i suppose because they usually pull the wheels off, and stick mirrors under them, tossing shiny marbles around as decoration.

i guess i understand the why, but at that point, i usually move along. not interested in the soft underbelly of the car, and all the clean chrome that might be found there.

caught this one before they had a chance to pop the hood, or balance it up on three wheels or something similar. pretty sure he moved it soon after i took this shot, since i only have the one of it.

after a few hours research, and looking at the last minute booking prices, we decided to just take a train down to san diego for our vacation. better half had an email with an incredible deal on a room for a week, as compared with other hotels in the area.

anywhere else in the united states, aside from washington dc, was going to be out of the question due to price and/or weather issues, so one less thing to worry about.

last time we did a week anniversary trip in san diego, it rained most of the week. really didn't matter. i like the rain, and i like to hang out with the better half, so we did fine. forecast this year is hot and sunny, so hoping to get out a bit and see stuff.

too bad we're gonna miss the last games of the baseball season by a week. had an opportunity to get four tickets to a padres game last week, but i just got back from my road trip, and couldn't do it. my son's former college roommate made the team a year or so ago, and seems to be doing well. would have been fun to watch him play.

well, the good news is that we will be able to get to the saint hilary's show on saturday; bad news, we'll be unable to go to san pedro—have fun jimbo39. take lots of pictures and post them!

quandry

1954 chevy bel air

saw this car pull up in the middle of the lane in front of the gym at san fernando high school, during move in for the show in july. he jumped out and took a few shots of his ride with the building behind it. figured as long as he was doing that, i'd just ask if he minded if i got a shot too.

not one of my best, and it seems a little out of focus, but maybe that just gives it a more dream-like early morning quality. ya, i'll go with that excuse. i like it anyway.

we are getting so bad about planning our anniversary trips as the years go by. used to book them six months in advance, and have something to look forward to and plan for.

the last few, maybe a couple months of planning. don't really get the best deals that way, but we don't go to crazy ass places anyway. better half needs to get a passport one of these years...but that's another story.

now, we had to schedule our vacation early this year, but in another week, better half's sister will be here to take car of their mom, and we are going to...hell if i know. we have nothing planned. i just blew a wad, showing my mom a good time, and doing my kid a favor.

not that we don't enjoy our time together; we're just both so effn busy with each of our jobs, and me chasing cars and working on pictures on my free time. and just not having any particular place in mind that we gotta see.

just know we gotta get away from the grind at work, and it really is an increasing workload. and yes, our employers flip out when we are away. somehow a good chunk of the work doesn't get touched and is waiting for our return, followed by a frenzy of "missed" deadlines.

i just don't know. and to top it off, we're early this year, and the san pedro show is late, running the weekend we are supposed to take off. same with st hilary's. so that sucks.

at least we should be back for the dia de muertos show, which is just up the street, so that will be nice to return to.

now i'm just rambling about shit no one cares about, but i can, so i will.
