what's up?

1959 chevrolet impala

same clubs and cars always seem to get these spaces under the solar panels at san fernando. i suppose because they usually pull the wheels off, and stick mirrors under them, tossing shiny marbles around as decoration.

i guess i understand the why, but at that point, i usually move along. not interested in the soft underbelly of the car, and all the clean chrome that might be found there.

caught this one before they had a chance to pop the hood, or balance it up on three wheels or something similar. pretty sure he moved it soon after i took this shot, since i only have the one of it.

after a few hours research, and looking at the last minute booking prices, we decided to just take a train down to san diego for our vacation. better half had an email with an incredible deal on a room for a week, as compared with other hotels in the area.

anywhere else in the united states, aside from washington dc, was going to be out of the question due to price and/or weather issues, so one less thing to worry about.

last time we did a week anniversary trip in san diego, it rained most of the week. really didn't matter. i like the rain, and i like to hang out with the better half, so we did fine. forecast this year is hot and sunny, so hoping to get out a bit and see stuff.

too bad we're gonna miss the last games of the baseball season by a week. had an opportunity to get four tickets to a padres game last week, but i just got back from my road trip, and couldn't do it. my son's former college roommate made the team a year or so ago, and seems to be doing well. would have been fun to watch him play.

well, the good news is that we will be able to get to the saint hilary's show on saturday; bad news, we'll be unable to go to san pedro—have fun jimbo39. take lots of pictures and post them!

pay it forward

1936 buick

stunning buick from the oldies san fernando show. had to wait a bit for the owner and his friends to move out of the way. i took the opportunity to hang out in the shade across the street, and to shoot a few of the dodges that were over there.

they finally finished polishing the car, and moved back enough that i could get a quick set of shots.

i might have told this one before, but its relevant today. a long and possibly boring and overly detailed story, that no one will care about, but it gives me something to write, which i haven't had much time to do lately.

besides, it will give my buddy jimbo39, something to read with his morning coffee.

couple of years ago, better half and i were in washington dc for our anniversary.

this was back when the iphone 6 plus had just come out, and my better half had just purchased one before our trip. damn thing is so big, but he has big hands... [and big feet...he'd say sometimes big feet just mean big feet...]

one day on vacation, we had rented a car to get out of dodge, and head out to one of the caverns i'd visited as a kid growing up there. we realized we didn't have a car charger for the thing, and we were using it to navigate us there. so we stopped out in the middle of east jesus nowhere at some cell phone carrier's store, to get one. the phones were so new, that the hickified sales people had never seen a live one yet; they were expecting a couple in a shipment that day. they all gathered round and asked if they could hold it. golllll-eeee, jim bob.

they ain't my kin; i was a navy brat, so we just lived there for a few years, but my better half likes to say i'm related to everyone in virginia and west virginia.

anyway, they happened to have a charger that fit the phone, and he got his phone back and we headed on down the road.

during our trip, we had remained stubbornly on cali time.

end of the week, late in the afternoon the day before we were to catch a plane home, we were having a late lunch in the air & space museum on the mall, at mickey d's [a little vomit in my mouth]. that's what you have to choose from inside that particular museum, so we just went with it.

we hung out enjoying the air conditioning for about an hour. then realizing the museums would only be open for maybe another hour, so we headed over to the natural history museum.

if you've never been to dc and/or on the mall there, you don't really have a feel for how far it is to trot across the field and over several city blocks. add on top of that, the sections that are closed off for field renewal or other construction, and you're sort of running a maze. then run a gauntlet of school children on a field trip, sitting in large groups on the stairs leading up to the entry doors, waiting on their busses to take them back to the school, only to have to wait in line to get through security and metal detectors at every museum anymore.

all this took a bit of time. but then you get in, and everything slows down. things are changed from when i was a kid, but the elephant is still there in the rotunda. they've cleaned him up, and moved his tiger buddy to another room. and the worse thing is, they somehow removed that taxidermy smell that used to overpower the room, the one that would take me back to being that little kid on my own school field trip, or a weekend with my parents and sibs at the museums. sucks.

anyway, we were looking for a particular piece of furniture that has been there forever. if you go to the second floor in the bones wing, you will see a round, fiberglass nineteen-sixties vintage sitting pod, that sort of looks like a space ship. you can see it in a little virtual tour from the museum's website, if you take a little look around on the second floor, in the blue section of the map, bones: 3, you'll see what i'm talking about.

the reason is, when my brother and i were little little kids, we used to climb on this thing, though i think it was a bright orange back then. it used to be a little further down the hall, below a domed ceiling. the thing about it was the sheer perfection of the acoustics. if you've never experienced the concavity of an old fiberglass seat, you should, especially if you need to slice one off. my little brother's favorite thing to do used to be to sit in one of the shallows and fart. BANG! it reverberated. it embarassed our mother. it was perfection.

so anytime one of us are in dc, we have to go check to see if its still there, knowing one of these years they will pull it and replace it with some less durable piece of crap seating. i always take a picture and send it to my bro.

this time, my better half suggested we each take a seat and take a selfie to send to him. leaning over to be in the frame, i hear a FRAP! holy shit, my better half let one rip—he was trying to help me get the full experience or something. but ewww, and omg so funny.

getting on with the original point of this bit of history, i wanted to take a quick stop down the end of that hall, to check out the mummies. i stopped to ask my better half how much time do we have left before the museum closes?

he went to check his phone for the time, and, well, his phone was gone. his brand new phone. lost in dc. a city full of tourists. and the ipad was back in the hotel room, so he couldn't just do a find my phone and hope at that point. and we were leaving the next day, not really any time to come back to inquire at lost and found desks anywhere, or to meet up with some stranger, if we did happen to locate them on the app.

i did have my old iphone five on me at the time, but i had to dig it out of my jacket or purse, or wherever. it had just been easier to ask him for the time, since his phone hangs off his belt all the time. it was about twenty minutes to closing.

after a quick, panicked melt down, we retraced our steps, through this museum, back to the farting chair. not there. we stopped at the lost and found room. no phones turned in there either.

remembering the last time he had it in his hand, was at the air & space museum, we decided we'd try to make it back in time. practically running through the mall maze, while i attempted to call his number, in hopes that someone would answer the phone, we moved at a suprisingly quick pace, even for me.

someone even answered, but said nothing, then hung up. shit. where could they be? i sent a few text messages hoping they would respond or call back somehow.

we got to the other museum entrance with minutes to spare. first we checked in at lost and found, in case someone had turned in a lost phone. nope. we headed back to the mickey d, where they had already shut the doors, and security was trying to get the patrons already inside to finish their meals and get out. we explained the situation, and talked our way in, figuring we'd just check the table where we'd sat for lunch.

sadly, it was not at the table or under it or anywhere. so so bummed.

on our way back out, we passed an employee, and asked if they'd found a phone. she was a little dicey, could practically imagine the little halo over her head, but she said no, she hadn't found a phone. she noticed her manager not far away, so we asked him. he was on his way out, but hadn't known about one being turned in. he left.

then the original employee, called over to another employee, an older lady, and said something to her in spanish. she came over and pulled the phone out of her uniform pocket.

better half was so relieved to get his phone back, he offered the lady a hundred bucks. she declined to take it several times, but he finally convinced her to use it to buy something for her grandchildren. she finally took it, and we left, tired after the adrenaline fueled hike over to this museum, and incredibly finding the phone.

fast forward to yesterday. i'm leaving work, heading to my mom's house for the night. exiting the parking garage, and in the turnabout outside, i swear i'd just passed over a cell phone on the ground. checking the rearview mirror, i quickly pulled to the curb, and got out to investigate.

figured i'd grab it before a car actually ran it over and crushed it.

yes, turned out to be an iphone six plus, just like my better half's. but in some sort of protective waterproof exoskeleton of a case. i'm sort of blocking the exit, so i throw it in my car and take off.

at my mom's i'm trying to figure out what to do with it. obviously, its locked, and it isn't going to recogize my fingerprint. i notice that there had been a missed call about an hour earlier. fortunately, the phone lets you swipe to call it back from a locked screen, so i give it a shot.

second ring, some guy answers. sounding like an idiot, i explain that i'd found this phone, and was trying to find the owner, that i noticed he'd called, and hoped that he knew the owner, hoping he wasn't just some random telemarketer.

he did know the guy, though he wouldn't give the name or the number. said he's also lost a phone...

sorry, i only found this one phone, could he please contact the owner somehow, and tell him to call back on his cell.

later, after not getting any call back, i realized the thing was on silence, and i'd missed a few different calls and text messages. none, i think from the owner, just his friends, wondering why he hadn't called or what up? i would literally have to be looking at it to notice it had lit up and was "ringing." and since i was doing other stuff, i hadn't "heard" it.

it was low on battery, so i had to figure out how to open the charger port on this fort knox of a box, to get it some juice.

i figured i'll find out more about it in the morning and got ready for bed. then the thing rang with an obnoxious ring tone, very loudly. the owner had triggered the find my phone, and sent a message saying his name was bryan, and giving a phone number, which the phone offered to dial. so i finally got to speak to him. he offered to come get it right then, he's in santa ana, he'd meet me anywhere. he did describe where he had been, which did place him at my office building, so it was the owner. i'm betting he put it on the roof of his car and drove off forgetting about it, hence it hitting the ground on accelerating out of the parking garage.

told him, i'm ready to go to sleep, could he meet me at my office in the morning? he said he'd call back after i'm in the office at seven.

today, at almost eleven, when i go to lunch, i still hadn't heard from him. so i hit the call back button, that still was showing on his screen. he finally answers, and apologizes. not clear on if he had a contractor in his house, or if he was a contractor on a job in a house, but he hadn't been able to let me know yet.

he offered to meet me when i go to lunch. told him i was on my way out right then. settled on him meeting me in an hour, when i got back.

so, an hour later, he found me sitting on the wall, nearby where he originally dropped it. he totally wanted to give me a reward, write a check or something. sad to think he felt he had to compensate me in some way. maybe people expect to be rewarded. it's his phone, i was just doing the right thing, giving it back to him, as i'd hope someone would do the same for me, if i ever lose something.

he was insisting, but i told him i'd lost a phone before, and someone gave it back; i'm just paying it forward. he said thanks again, very happy to have his phone back, and i headed back in to ride the elevator back up to my desk.

the end.

one of those days

1952 chevy deluxe

sleeping in sounded real good this morning. really thought about it. for five minutes. then got up and got ready to head over to signal hill.

smeared sunscreen all over my face and arms, expecting the blazing sun that just seeks out my pasty white skin, or rather already sun-damaged skin. sunscreen makes me look more ghostly, or ghastly, especially later when i start to sweat it off.

stuck my phone in my back pocket, grabbed my camera bag, and a bottle of water. brought my pinstriped hat too, just in case. parked all the gear by the back door.

thought i'd take one more pit stop before heading out, since i never know what facilities will be available at the shows. so i go to drop trou and hear a plop...i hadn't even sat down yet...shit shit shit...the phone...in the back pocket. totally forgot about it. fortunately, i hadn't done anything yet, and blocked the fact that i was reaching into the toilet, and went after the phone. ewwww.

so, a couple of seconds in the drink, and the phone still worked. or at least i thought it did. actually, everything except the sound, that is. negates the whole point of a phone.

siri never liked me anyway. but the bitch wouldn't read me the directions anymore, so i had to write the directions down and/or keep peeking at the screen.

and i was going to stop for a donut on the way, but i left so early, the shop i would have stopped at wasn't even open.

apart from those little tragedies, the rest of the morning was perfect. got my favorite parking spot for this show, was there before the sun came up, and it stayed overcast and cool until i left at ten. seriously, the sun started coming out as i drove away.

the sultans are all very friendly and organized. and for a change, one of my better half's fans chatted with me several times, not quite gushing, but extremely pleased, about a print he had been gifted a few years ago. it is a very nice shot of the guy's car. i was there the night he shot it. but my better half wasn't there, had stuff he needed to get done, and perhaps get called in to work, so i've passed his regards and happiness on to my better half.

it's a good show, a good variety of cars, plenty of chevys. it's good to see some different cars once in a while.

oh, and their, ahem, facilties, were the taj mahal of porta potties, really a portable building. oh so refreshingly cold from the air conditioning. it was warm outside, and to open that door to the frigid air, was divine. and three separate stalls inside, and sinks with the automatic faucets...so fancy.

hoping my phone will dry out by morning, or i'll be making a stop at the apple store tomorrow.

this car belongs to one of the sultans. when i got there so early, member cars were the only cars there. and this one was clean. and beautiful. i wouldn't mind a car like this. my hair is an unruly mess anyways, so a convertible would be nice.

happy eighty-ninth birthday to my mother-in-law. let's have cake!

cat's spots

1961 chevy impala

this impala is a little over the top, on the paint job.

airbrushing, pinstriping, etching, and to top it off, cheetah or leopard spots on the little side panel space. i'm thinking cheetah...it's a faster animal. though leopards are pretty bad ass too.

no doubt about the quality of the paint job, it's very good. it just overwhelms and detracts from the car, which seemed to be in good condition.

completely my opinion, which means diddly-squat. it's a beautiful car, if i just go with it.

was kinda sad it was backed up so close to the plants behind it, and close to the car next to it and pop up on the other side. just got in the way, and couldn't get a clean shot from the back angle.

1961 chevy impala

winner, winner, chicken dinna

1962 chevy impala

this guy asked about my pictures, and asked that i don't forget to take a shot of his and his friend's cars. not sure which car belonged to who, since i didn't write it down; but for sure it belongs to one of them. i'll add the other, a sixty three, in a little while.

after another hectic week at work, we made it out to the fair yesterday. great day, great weather. would have been perfect for a car show...like the white wall nationals. but a girl can't be everywhere at the same time, and my better half was sort of on call to go in to work, so we went to costa mesa.

second day the fair was open, and we wanted to go see my stuff hanging in the photography building. found the first, a picture of one of the dancers blessing the cars, from the dia de los muertos car show back in october. no dice, i mean no ribbon. still looked good hanging there.

then over to the where the transportation pics were...same area as last year...in the corner. there's an impala, there's a fleetline; nope and nope. and there's a nineteen fifty two chevy hood ornament. yes! a ribbon! and not honorable mention! third place. good enough. never have done better than a mention, so yay, right?

and then there was one more picture to find. and we both had a brain fart, and couldn't remember what we were looking for. lol. so, while my better half called his mom to tell her the news, i had to search my phone for the entry tag, since i just couldn't picture what it was in my head at all. finally found it, and took a few minutes to locate it, but there it was, a lighthouse, in the landscape section. and nope.

so, one bigger ribbon out of five pictures hanging on the wall is good. better half's mother was overjoyed, but they're both just that type of people. i called my mom. my dad answered gruffly; he was waiting for a call from an air conditioning repairman. heat makes you pretty grumpy. my mom got on the phone quickly, and she was happy about it, but had to get off the phone quickly.

my dad doesn't have the best of hearing, and i don't have the best communication skills. i think i'm out of his auditory range most of the time, so it's just easier to let my mom translate info to him. apparently it didn't translate all the way, as he sent an email at some point in the afternoon, asking if i'd sent a picture of the first place shot and ribbon, so he could get bragging rights with the relatives. no dad, just third place. don't be too disappointed.

1963 chevy impala

welcome to the jungle

1953 chevy bel air

this started off as a completely different write up, but then i read it, and it just sounded lame. well, the usual amount of lameness. so i dumped it.

so i thought, instead of a usual rundown of a car show, i'll pretend i'm marlin perkins, and this is the mutual of omaha's wild kingdom. starring as the poor sidekick that always did the actual animal wrangling, my better half.

sunday. just after sun up, we headed out into the wild lands of industry hills. shhh, be verwy verwy quiet. we're hunting wabbits. no, we're looking for some larger beasts.

told my sidekick, it will be hot, so we will probably leave pretty early. brought my safari hat, so i might be better prepared to hide from the golden orb in the sky. its etched with magical ancient runes, to ward off evil beasts with gaping mouths. i raise my fists in defiance, yelling, or more, thinking, in my head, "bite me, go get your two scoops and leave me alone!"

one of the game wardens at the gate, sent us up a hill, to a distant hunting ground. we unpacked our gear, and heard the roars of the giants in the distance. we walked past some kind of shelters for ye olde fashioned horsepower, and a building that may or may not be used to race some two wheeled variety of animal around in circles.

as we rounded the building, and got our first glimpse of the valley below, i may or may not have heard my better half whisper to himself, "i'm fucked." he really did have other things he needed to do that day, but seeing the bounty spread out below, he knew we might be there a wee bit longer than i said.

side note: at the gate, my better half inquired how much the entry fee was. the woman directing traffic behind us overheard, but slightly wrong. she said, "one-hundred and twenty-five! each!" i forget what incredulous remark he may have said, but he was ready to leave. i shook my head no, and the girl in front of us, holding the cash box kinda shrugged awkwardly. another woman came out from behind a curtain, saying "no, no, no! twelve dollars, each."

better half figured out later, that the big number was what they charged vendors, that the girl didn't know what was what at that point in the day...we were a bit early, before official open time...and the other lady was spot on with the spectator fee.

we thought it was funny. anyway, we got our black bracelets, and felt like tagged animals...easing back into character here...

we decided to split up, better to encircle the unsuspecting prey. it became apparent, that it was the other way around—we were surrounded. beast were lounging everywhere, in the shade, in the sun, many being rubbed, err soothed by smaller species.

the small animals seemed keen on attracting attention. they are known to sometimes collect shiny objects, to attract the females' attention. the females may pretend not to notice, but they do. they do.

we began shooting, almost immediately, but the beasts have surprisingly thick, tough skins, and it was if they did not even notice or feel our presence. they stay where we shot them. there were so many, we had to move quickly.

occasionally, one would rumble past, causing us to jump out of the way, but really more of a threat posture than an actual threat.

the sun was going higher in the sky, some of the beasts had strong odors, hot metallic smells, animals dying a slow death. they needed a cool drink, or else other larger beasts would come and drag them away.

the herds were clumped in packs, with sometimes a lone animal nearby.

i spied this brightly colored animal, with it's pack, on the far side of the field. it reclined under this feeble tree, in a futile attempt to stay cool. it just sat there, and i shot it. i shot it several times. and i would do it again...

join us again, next time. for another edition of the mutual of omaha's wild kingdom.

ok. that was kinda stupid, but i dont feel like starting over. thank you for your patience.

fine

1963 chevy impala

i'm back. i did finally leave the house, and go to my mom's.

better half started blasting the room i was in with lysol, while i was trying to eat dinner. sense of smell is intricately locked in with sense of taste, and since i think lysol reeks of vomit, it was going to ruin my dinner, that he had so graciously walked uptown to get me. i was afraid the next step was that he was going to go stand behind his mother's wheelchair, with her in it, and draw a circle of salt around them, and start shouting, "thou shall not pass!"

seems the only thing we ever have difficulty with is coping with germs around his mother when we're ill and who would kick the other's ass—underdog vs mighty mouse.

everyone's fine, btw.

loved the color of this car, and how the light was hitting it.

father and son

1951 mercury and 1950 ford

1951 mercury

putting up a few shots of these two cars, since the kid asked. well, he asked my better half, and then i got the email.

i like the idea of the nose to nose shot, but i'm not so sure my wide angle lens does them justice. just couldn't get up high enough. maybe next time i should climb on top of another car or truck.

not sure if these are works in progress or if this is it. better half said the headlights are really meant for motorcycles is what i think they told him. whatever they are, the headlights on the black one had small red lights around them and they made the grille glow red.

black one belongs to the dad, the other to the kid. nice to share the same interest, and to pass your knowledge on to the next generation.

spur of the moment

1958 chevy impala

it was going to rain today, so slept in. thought i'd just be sitting around the house today.

when it still wasn't raining at eight-thirty, asked my better half if he wanted to just drive over to legg lake, to see if any cars were there for the boulevardos show. thought it was close enough to home, if there was nothing or if it started raining, we could just go to the mall, or turn around.

better half said they wouldn't be there, since they were going to cruise in from los angeles. he kinda wanted to drive out there and watch, but mostly he just wanted to hang out with me, and i wanted to take pictures.

drove past the lake, and saw no show cars there. got on the freeway, and i said, what the hell, let's just drive out to chino and see if anyone showed up for that show. flyers said rain or shine. we were already half way there anyway.

racing the clouds, and it was slightly sprinkling, we went anyway. even thought about just driving out to cucamonga, checking into a hotel, buying a change of clothes, and kicking back in a jacuzzi. well, they didn't have any of those rooms available, so we skipped that idea. better half was on call for work anyway.

took a different route to the chino show than i usually take, and ended up at the end of the town, near the railroad tracks.

figured, we could just make a quick walk through, if the rain started, we could dash under a roof, or cover the camera with a plastic bag until we could find somewhere to pack everything back in the camera bag.

i'd been before, and it's usually very hot, and very busy and crowded. lots of cars, up and down the streets, on the lawn in front of city hall, and through side lots. cars can cruise along the street route.

well, the rain did scare a lot of cars away. but there were still a lot of cars i like to shoot anyway. better half didn't seem to see anything he wanted to shoot, until we came to a mostly empty lot, with some of the veteranos cars in it. he took some pictures, and set up a time lapse, to catch the movement of the clouds. actually, turned out really interesting, and he's having fun editing it. maybe he'll post it for a change.

while he shot that video, i quickly went and walked the rest of the show.

found this impala near the city hall. thought it looked pretty awesome with the clouds overhead. turned around pretty quickly, to head back to fetch my better half. the rain was coming. this car and the one on far side of it drove away soon after.

made it back to my car, just as sprinkles started to fall...
